Barret Oliver is an American photographer and also a former child actor. Oliver is best known for his role as Bastian Balthazar Bux in the film adaptation of Michael Ende’s novel The Neverending Story, including other roles in D.A.R.Y.L., Cocoon, and Cocoon: The Return.
Barret Oliver Education
While auditioning for roles, Barret also continued his education at the ‘Los Feliz School’ in Los Angeles. He appeared in many auditions and had his mother act as his manager.
Barret focused on his studies but never tried returning to acting. He began an alternate career as a photographer instead. He learned 19th-century photography from artists such as Stephen Berkman and studied with artists such as Cole Weston and George Tice. Barret’s work has since been exhibited in many art galleries around the world.

Subsequently, Oliver was cast as the lead in Tim Burton’s short film Frankenweenie and as the android “Daryl” in D.A.R.Y.L. a 1985 film, a part for which he was the winner of a Saturn Award.
His last played role in a feature film was Willie Saravian in Paul Bartel’s in 1989 ensemble comedy Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills. Later on, Oliver became a printer, photographer and specialized in nineteenth-century processes such as collodion and Woodburytype.
Oliver’s work has been displayed in gallery exhibitions, museums and used in films. His book A History of the Woodburytype was published by Carl Mautz Publishing in the year 2007.
